From 2010 thru 2016, JRA Architects was commissioned by Leon County Schools to design a two phased improvement project at W.T. Moore Elementary School in Tallahassee. The initial phase consisted of a new kitchen and expansion of the existing dining room. The original kitchen was designed for warming of meals, not food preparation. So JRA designed a new 2,000 square foot fully equipped kitchen, behind the original kitchen, complete with three serving lines and a pulpier disposal system. The existing kitchen was then demolished and remolded into an expansion of the existing, undersized, dining area. The existing platform, which was located opposite the kitchen, was removed and replaced with a new raised stage, stage storage and control room. Additional improvements included HVAC upgrades, the relocation of the existing main electrical feed and the addition of a fire sprinkler system in the new kitchen and renovated dining area.
The second phase consisted of a new 5,000 sf Administration Building. The existing administration area, which totaled less than 2,000 sf, was located in the center of the campus, which did not allow for controlled access to the school. The new building was located at the north end of the campus, adjacent to the visitor/staff parking and the bus loop. The building was positioned to secure the entire north perimeter of the campus with visitor access channeled only through the new building. It also housed a clinic, a staff work room, offices and a conference room with remote learning capabilities.
