In May of 2017, JRA Architects was selected by the Walton County School Board for the design of a new 10-classroom addition at the South Walton High School. Prior to the start of the design, JRA developed a new Master Plan for the Campus. New concepts included a second addition for 20 classrooms, new bus loop, expanded field house and concession and storage for the football/soccer stadium.
The final design of the 10-classroom addition positioned the building in front of the existing school on the open front plaza. This accomplished three major goals the Board had laid out prior to the start of design. First, it helped secure the campus by enclosing the open, unsecure plaza. Second, it provided a new front door which better directs visitor traffic to the administration area Finally, since it was placed on the existing hardscape, re-permitting of the storm water system was not required. The 17,000-sf building was completed in January 2019. It contains one science lab, two ESE spaces, one computer lab, one health training lab, six standard high school classrooms and a teacher’s work area.
