When Playground Music Center, a beloved regional music retailer and education provider, outgrew its previous location, JRA Architects was brought on to help them transition into a new, larger home on Capital Circle in Tallahassee. The project involved transforming a 9,000-square-foot former office building into a vibrant and functional space that supports both retail and music education.
JRA worked closely with the Playground Music team to reimagine the layout, tailoring every square foot to meet the unique needs of their business. The centerpiece of the new facility is a 1,100-square-foot main retail showroom, thoughtfully designed for instrument displays, accessories, and customer interaction. In addition to the primary sales floor, smaller specialty areas were created to showcase band instruments, stringed instruments, and percussion gear, providing an organized and immersive shopping experience for musicians of all ages.
Understanding that music education is at the heart of Playground Music’s mission, the new space also includes eight acoustically separated practice rooms, designed for individual music lessons in a comfortable and sound-controlled environment. These studios support a wide range of instruction, from beginner to advanced, across a variety of instruments.
To complete the facility’s operational needs, JRA also designed dedicated instrument storage and a fully equipped repair area, ensuring staff have the tools and space necessary to provide full-service support to their customers.
This project reflects JRA’s expertise in adaptive reuse, retail design, and educational environments, bringing together functionality, brand expression, and customer experience under one roof. We’re proud to have helped Playground Music strike the right chord in their new location.
